Are You Given Victory and Provision Except on Account of the Weak Among you?

Allah’s Messengerr said, “Are you given victory and provision except on account of the weak among you?” (Collected by al-Bukhari, 2896)

The rich and powerful think that they are the reason behind earning aid and provisions [for themselves and for their society]. However, this authentic hadeeth indicates the opposite of what they think. How many people have been tested with poverty for a long time then were granted a mentally ill child, for example, and then sustenance started pouring on them because of that child. You would also find a strong, able bodied person who strives his entire life in the market, attending it early on and being the last to leave, yet, lives in poverty. Then, he is granted a child who is mentally challenged, crippled, or paralyzed, and then the father is granted wide sustenance on account of this child, “Are you granted provision except on account of your weak.”

Currently, numerous people suffer from looking after families with a number of weak members, and therefore, their financial abilities are challenged, causing them distress while striving to acquire the funds necessary for their needs. Yet, they should ponder about their condition if they did not have such weak dependents. The sustenance they already earn may have come to them as a result of having such family with weak members.

Many people are unable to bear having a mentally challenged child, to the extent that many of them, women in specific, would seek to have an abortion if the doctors discover that their fetus will be mentally or physically challenged, or that it has some physical deformity. It is not permissible to transgress the limits in such cases, such as by aborting it. This is a calamity and one must have patience, expect the reward with Allah, and strive to save the child’s life, like one would do for a child that does not suffer from disability. Then in the end one’s reward will be with Allah, the Blessed, the Glorified. In addition, one will be granted sustenance on account of this disabled child. The weak who are looked at with scorn and disdain and are considered a misfit to society, might be the reason behind the society as a whole gaining victory.

Those who enjoy wealth and physical strength usually become proud and ascribe their fortunes to their own strength, power or ability. Have they not heard of this hadeeth, “Are you given victory and provision except on account of the weak among you?” It should be known that the weak may actually be closer to their Creator since they do not rely on strength, money or other fortunes, but rather, their relationship and connection is with Allah. Generally, those who are like this tend to have purer hearts, unlike those deceived by their strength or riches. Richness and strength generally cause people to commit transgression. People should seek good health, but they should avoid allowing their enjoying good health to turn them away from thanking Allah, the Exalted, and from worshipping Him. One may reasonably seek riches and wealth, but this should not cause them to turn away from knowing their limitations. And to Allah we complain.
